Our project

Access to documentary sources and a critical analysis of written communication (both handwritten and printed) are essential in the study of the Modern Age

‘Nobiliary culture and power dynamics between Spain and Italy (16th-18th centuries)’, promoted by the University of Valladolid, was born in 2021 with a profoundly interdisciplinary and integrating vocation. Directed by Alba María García Fernández and Carlos José Hernando Sánchez, it is a project characterised by its breadth of scope, both geographically and chronologically, covering, fundamentally (although not only) the study of the relations and influences established between the Spanish Monarchy and Italian territories from the 16th to the 18th century.

With a clear interdisciplinary vocation and oriented towards the knowledge and consolidation of new research, we promote the analysis of, among other aspects, political and ceremonial language, the dynamics established between the so-called centres of power (the royal court, the viceroyal courts and the cities) and the influence of diplomacy in the formation and development of the political culture of the modern centuries.

We dedicate part of our work to delve into the important role played by women in the Modern Age, in order to know their real environments and circumstances between the 16th and 18th centuries.

Issues such as political discourses and practices, the complex dialectics of government and power, ceremonial spaces, artistic and cultural relations, together with the analysis of the courtly and courtly sphere, are just some of the objects of study that we periodically address in the different academic and scientific activities and events programmed.
